Abstract. Research suggests that listening to white noise may improve some aspects of cognitive performance in individuals with lower attention. This study investigated the impact of white noise on new word learning in healthy young adults, and whether this effect was mediated by executive attention skills.
Neutral, steady sounds like rain or flowing rivers are generally better for sustaining focus, but some people might work better with animal sounds. That’s the beauty of brain variability — everyone’s preferred background noise is different.

Sounds of nature—Keeps your brain engaged by increasing concentration
Does Noise harm your Brain? Well yes. It turns out, the continuous background noise also known as white noise which comes from machines and other appliances, can harm your brain, it does so by overstimulating your auditory cortex– the part of the brain that helps us perceive sound. And it’s even worse in children.
Research from our group has shown that attention and memory performance can be improved through auditory white noise exposure to inattentive and ADHD diagnosed children.
Most people think they want silence at night when the constant sound of pink or white noise would be better. Not only do they help us fall asleep, but pink noise has been proven to improve memory and may offer a deeper sleep than white noise.
White noise can be one of the best colors to help with anxiety, especially if you have trouble sleeping at night.
Atmosphere: Relaxing Sounds
White Noise Lite is a free app that lets you cycle through 40 sounds, or mix multiple together to help you get a good night’s rest.
Research has proven that classical tunes are the ultimate focus music. There’s even a term for this phenomenon: the Mozart Effect. Listening to classical music when you study arouses your brain, making it easier to absorb new information in a meaningful way. Ambient music is another solid option for studying.
Is music good while studying? Some research suggests that music can help reduce stress during an academic task and that it may help with memory and processing during tasks that require thinking. However, this may depend on the type of music and the individual.
Since white noise contains all frequencies at equal intensity, it can mask loud sounds that stimulate your brain. That’s why it’s often recommended for sleeping difficulties and sleep disorders like insomnia.
Pink noise is a constant sound in the background. It filters out things that distract you, like people talking or cars going by, so they don’t interrupt your sleep. You may hear it called ambient noise. Like white noise, it’s a steady background hum that may give you a better night’s sleep.
Some people aim to stop using white noise by the time their child is 2 years old. Others continue to use it until their child is 3 - 4 years old and is able to decide for themselves if they want it playing while they sleep. Plenty of older kids and adults sleep better with it, too.
You can imagine white noise as similar to white light. When every color on the spectrum is bright, it becomes white light — similarly, white noise includes all frequencies at the same intensity. Examples of White Noise: Whirring fan.
