Music festivals make most of their money through income generated from ticket sales, sponsorship, advertising, concession fees and merchandise. Additional revenue comes from things like database access, VIP areas, WIFI access, mobile phone charging and chillout areas.
This year, Coachella attendees will spend at least $399 for basic admission for each weekend of the festival. The event spans two weekends, April 15-17 and April 22-24. Tickets to the festival have steadily climbed over the 17-year history of the event.

Normally for festivals, the agent has a set figure, called their ‘Festival fee’. Depending on the festival, and the factors above, they will go back to the promoter with a price. The promoter then enters a negotiating phase with the agent.
A “festival fee” as most artists refer to it, can range from Lady Gaga’s reported $4 million per show or Radiohead’s $3 million all the way down to pennies or, in the case of SXSW, free tickets to the festival.
Let’s say you sell out a venue to max capacity, which is 1,000. The tickets sell for $20, meaning the show generated $20,000. If you get 85% of the sales, your band takes home $17,000 for one show!
Everyone in the vehicle must be wearing Festival Wristband. No camping or sleeping in your car.
VIP Areas offer specialty food & drink vendors, air-conditioned restrooms, shaded seating areas and full cash bars. VIP Areas are located at the Five Peaks tents adjacent to the Main Stage and in the Rose Garden. Wristband registration required.
Alcohol – $132
Regular beer (Heineken) is $10 a pop, craft beer is $12, well drinks are $12 and specialty cocktails were $14 a piece. I will say I think cocktails are the way to go at Coachella, they have surprisingly heavy pours and our drinks were always really stiff.
Begin planning the event six or more months in advance. Secure big picture items such as festival goals, theme, and musicians three to six months out. Solidify details such as caterers, permits, and extra activities one to three months out.
The obvious expenses were water, food, security to accommodate the crowds and the production costs. But the biggest and perhaps the most important aspect of a music festival – the artists have significantly increased their fees to make up for downslide in music revenues due to digital streaming revolution.
Music festivals attract a lot of people. The average attendance of a music festival is 100,000 attendees, however, the 10 largest festivals in the world put this number to shame, to say the least.
Tickets cost $429 for general admission, but how much the entire Coachella experience costs depends on what you want. It can cost thousands of dollars for a VIP or luxury experience. In addition to admission, there are also costs for travel, transportation, food and drink, and “festival fashion” involved.
According to Billboard, Beyonce was paid $4 million to play at the Coachella Festival in 2018. Fans were outraged when they learned that the Queen Bee received a pittance in comparison to The Weeknd, who was also headlining and earned $8 million.
Is there an age limit/rule? No. The festival is all ages.
Someone from Business Insider who went to Coachella in 2019, wrote: “You’re allowed to buy or consume alcoholic beverages only in designated 21-plus areas. A variety of fenced-in beer gardens and cocktail spaces dot the sides of the main stages.”
